Playa Hermosa is the beach of choice for the Olive Ridley sea turtles that
come ashore to nest every year. The National Wild Life Refuge of Playa
Hermosa, whose main purpose is to protect the Olive Ridley sea turtles.
The
egg laying season is July to December. During September and October you may
watch thousands of turtle eggs hatch from their nests and head to the ocean.
View Leatherback Turtles as they hatch their eggs in the Wild.
Leatherback turtles have existed for over 100 million years. They are huge
weighing up to a ton and as long as a small car. They can dive to amazing
depths and swim across vast expanses of ocean.
The awesome Leatherback, the world's largest marine turtle, comes to shore
to lay it's eggs. The female drags it's almost 1000 pounds slowly from the
ocean to a safe place in the sand. The Leatherback, begins to digs a deep
whole with it's rear flippers and deposits many eggs. After this long and
tiring procedure, this awesome creature returns to the sea. This process can
take many hours.
During the turtle-nesting season there can be up to 1 million turtles
nesting on
Costa Rica's Pacific Coast. These different species of sea turtle lay their
eggs and return to the sea.
After a period of incubation, the babies that have hatched return to the sea
by swarm. This is the most
dangerous part of their life's journey due to predation. Sadly, once they
reach the sea, few turtles
survive into adulthood. About one in every 5,000 eggs laid will become a
fully-grown turtle.
Most die at sea. The ones that do survive will instinctively return many
years later to the same beach
where they were born in order to lay their own eggs.
Some of the most popular beaches for seeing these sea turtles in Costa Rica
include Playa Grande, Playa Hermosa, and Tortuguero Beach. All of these
locations offer guided tours to see turtles in Costa Rica.
